Understanding Anxiety

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a manifestation of fear and it describes our feelings of unease or worry and it is related to our primal fight or flight response. It includes emotions and physical sensations we might experience when we are fearful or nervous. Anxiety is like the security alarm that your brain uses to warn you of something about to happen.

Some people become more anxious than others such as those who struggle with self-confidence or highly driven people who have too much going on and no free time. Anxiety can also rise up very quickly in response to stress. Changes triggered in your body prepare you physically in case you need to act and these physical symptoms are your first warning of an anxiety attack.

Effects on Body, Mind and Soul

The mind, the body, and the spirit are interconnected. So when, for example, the mind is affected by anxiety the other two will also suffer.  If the mind is not healthy the other two cannot make up for it and we are not completely healed or healthy.

Negative emotions and thoughts have a negative effect upon the body and open the door for sickness and disease. Negative emotions can breed greater mental or emotional problems which may lead to ageing, sickness and death.  Many health problems do not completely clear up unless the mental issues are addressed. On many occasions, disease or sickness can be traced back to a mental cause such as an allergy resulting from anxiety or anger. Remember every part of us and our cells respond to positive and negative states of our minds. People often fail to trace their problems from cause to effect even though people experience negative results from negative emotions. In the treatment of emotional problems a wise person will pay attention to every part of their being with an understanding that this is essential for complete holistic healing of body, mind and spirit.

Disturbed mental states cause harm and can manifest in various spiritual problems including a decline in spirituality, losing interest in spiritual things and anger toward their peers or spiritual beings. When a person is spiritually awake and uplifted, they normally show a cheerfulness, boldness, and faith that gives them consistency and momentum in their life goals. When spirituality is affected reactions of discouragement, despondency, hopelessness, doubt, inconsistency, and laziness are exhibited, as well as guilt and fear, which have already been scientifically implicated with many mental and physical handicaps.

Learn to become aware of the cause of the effect as this helps to get rid of many long-standing problems. All aspects of humanity are interconnected and interact with each other. As one area is affected positively or negatively, its effects will overlap into all the other areas and have a similar effect on them as well. Thus it helps to work on every part of your being in order to experience a total healing when one part is affected.

Our thoughts affect our emotions, words, and actions. So, if we can change negative thoughts, we can also change our negative emotions and actions. Negative thoughts can paralyze or freeze up one’s entire being and inhibit progress in all pursuits or goals in life. The solution begins from within: transform the mind and you will transform the person.

What Triggers Anxiety?

Sometimes anxiety can seem to come from nowhere.  In these situations understanding what is triggering it can be a key part of recovery. If you are struggling with anxiety, there may be specific triggers such as phobias, or stressful events and situations, or a general heightened sense of feeling anxious. Triggers may include starting a new job, a first date, sitting an exam or having a baby. For a short time you might even find it hard to sleep, eat or concentrate. Then usually, after a short while or when the situation has passed, the feelings of anxiety stop.

Some feel they are never totally relaxed and may find it impossible to control their anxiety, fear or worry. Many suffer panic attacks which are times when anxiety triggers powerful physical symptoms such as sweating, chest pain, or dizziness which in turn lead to the fear that something serious may be wrong, such as a heart attack, or something undesirable might happen, such as fainting or being sick.  This triggers more anxiety, making the physical symptoms worse and panic attacks strike quickly, sometimes out of the blue.

Trigger and Pushing Points

Anxiety can have many triggers, or trigger points, and pushing points related to the depth or amount of exposure to a trigger in relation to one or more current emotions and/or events. A trigger alone may not create much anxiety, such as have all the time in the world to do a challenging task, as there is no immediate pressure attached. Add pressure onto a stressful situation, such as public speaking, and this pressure pushes your comfort zone to breaking point. This may result in an anxiety attack. Pushing your comfort zone past safe boundaries is much like stretching an elastic band to breaking point. You can stretch it so far and it gets tighter, just like an anxious mind when put under pressure, then any further and it snaps suddenly. This is the mind when it snaps into an anxiety or anger attack when it cannot cope.

Anxiety triggers can be tough to control. Each trigger will have its own potential treatment and to prevent all anxiety triggers and cure your anxiety it helps to know which coping strategies work most effectively.  Aim to live a life that’s focused on trigger prevention. Health fears are reduced through healthy living and exercise. Also, avoiding the media and negative news stores will reduce anxiety to life and living.

Trigger desensitization is used to describe the process of repeating a trigger so often that it no longer causes anxiety. So if you get anxious when you have a specific thought, then purposely have the thought so often that it no longer causes fear. The mind is very adaptive and one of the reasons that thoughts cause distress is because the mind resists and fights stress triggers rather than accept and get used to them. So drop into your heart and focus on the feeling of unconditional love to ease, dissolve and dispel anxiety.

Trigger Acknowledgement when you experience an anxiety trigger and learn to notice the fact that your anxiety increases. Explore whether or not it’s rational and pay attention to your symptoms. You can often reduce anxiety by simply stopping the trigger from cascading into a worse anxiety. This level of mindfulness can be difficult to practice but is possibly very valuable.

Learning from Anxiety

By learning about anxiety, spending time with it, and finally holding in your hand, you can relax your grip and let it fall away. It will have served its purpose. You will have loved that part of yourself and it won’t need to get your attention in that way again. You will be connected. Shine your light and love all unconditionally.

Feeling connected and with realizing that you’re enough can lead you to a cycle of inner fullness. It can give you an easy-to-remember awareness that you’re up for this, whatever the next exciting challenge or painful event may be. By listening to your anxiety, it also gets you to recognize your own power with, instead of power over, yourself and your life.

It is important to gradually expand your comfort zone so as not to be overwhelmed. Take small steps at a time and challenge yourself to do a little more until you feel comfortable and can tackle the situations that used to cause anxiety. So build up your confidence to cope by tackling small challenges, allowing you to cope and overcome in the big challenges. For example, perhaps talking to strangers makes you really anxious. Therefore, gradually, make challenges to talk to some acquaintances more, then eventually people you don’t know in your class, and finally complete strangers. Do not rush yourself, it is a process.

Spend time with anxiety to discover the source of the message and what you have to heal can be achieved in many ways. You have to find what works best for you. Approaches to combat anxiety include writing about it, meditating, helping others with their anxiety, welcoming and accepting it, laughing and loving everyone and everything.
